basant panchami 2018

Vasant Panchami or Saraswati Puja is a popular Hindu festival dedicated to the goddess of learning Saraswati, who is the deity of knowledge, art and music. She is generally shown seated on a white lotus, wearing a white silk sari and holding a book in her lower left hand. The eyes of the goddess are full of compassion. Her four hands denote four facets of human personality namely mind, intellect, alertness and ego.

According to Brahma Vaivarta Purana Lord Krishna blessed Goddess Saraswati, that on the even of Vasant Panchmi she will be preached, so after lord Ganesha, Sun and Vishnu, Shiva Goddess Saraswati is worshiped. It is also said that a very proud princess got married to Kalidas due to the conspiracy of Brahmans, as they wanted to teach her a lesson, so they searched Kalidas as most foolish person as he was cutting the same branch of the tree where he was sitting, hence they took him in front of her and presented him as very intelligent person but on the very first night she realized that she has been duped and hence she ousted Kalidas, and Goddess Saraswati blessed her and after that he became poet.

Each hands of her carries an object - a Book, a Veena, a Garland and a Water Pot. She is worshipped as a goddess of knowledge. Students and other educational place worship Goddess Saraswati with a belief that she will help in their studies. The pot of water she carries symbolizes the carrying of drink that liberates while also offering knowledge too as well as being able to purify right from wrong. The garland of crystals signifies self-reflection. Apart from this, she also serves as an inspiration to those in the creative arts, traditionally speaking, as she carries a ‘veena’.

A popular prayer that is made to Goddess Saraswati is the ‘Saraswati Vandana’ during her birthday, also known as Vasanth Panchami.
